Amphetamine aka
Whizz, billy, speed
Amphetamine
is a synthetic drug first created in 1887 by Lazar Edeleanu in
Berlin. Its creates an effect by increasing levels of
norepinephrine, serotonin and dopaine in the brain. It was
originally a derivative of compounds from the naturally occurring
plant extract ephedrine.
Amphetamine's physical effects can reduce
appetite, distort/heighten sensation, induce hyperactivity, dilated
pupils, increase blood pressure and a variety of other effects.
Younger people are at a higher risk of suffering a heart attack.
Psychological effects include anxiety, nervousness, creative
thinking, euphoria, increase energy, repetitive behaviour,
talkativeness, aggression, paranoia.
A build up of tolerance is attained rapidly which leads to a need to
consume ever larger quantities of the drug. Withdrawal after
extensive recreational use of amphetamines may include depression,
anxiety, fatigue, long period of sleep, suicidal thoughts and
psychosis.
Since 1960, amphetamine has been used by many of the UK's youth
cultures starting with the mods and later by the skinheads, goths,
punks and later the acid house and rave scene where it was valued
for its ability to enable the user to dance for long periods with
lots of energy..
Amphetamine is a Class B drug in the UK with a
unauthorised possession penalty of up to 5 years in prison or 14
years for possession with intent to supply.
